Artist's Profile

Achievements
- Currently I am working from the Henry Bird Studio situated in the centre of Northampton. This space provides me with the freedom and opportunity to use a variety of mediums, supports and life models. Some of my time is spent in the South Hams where I have a small workspace close to the beach.
- I have had my work exhibited and sold by both the Pastel Society at the Mall Galleries and the Society of Botanical Artists at Westminster Gallery.
- In 2006 a solo exhibition of my work was held at Cliff House in Salcombe.
- For the fifth consecutive year my pictures have been included in the Pastel Society’s annual exhibition. This year I received a letter from the Honorary Secretary thanking me for my assistance during the show and interaction with the public.
- Emerging Art Publishers have produced cards and prints of my work and sold these to outlets within the capital.
- As an Associate member of the Town and County Art Society I participate in their annual show by having my work selected and by volunteering my help wherever and whenever it is needed.
Skills and Abilities
- My artistic skills were developed over a number of years through working in watercolour, painting still life, landscapes and life. I have worked alongside and learned from a number of well respected established artists within Northamptonshire and as far a field as St Ives. These varied experiences has helped widen my approach and broadened my out look.
- For the past five years I have preferred soft pastels because of their intense colour, versatility, immediacy and texture. Soft pastels have enabled me to become more self expressive and to make careful moves into the whole new world of abstraction.
- Vibrant colour and strong form are predominant features of my work. I have a particular interest in simplifying the subject and at the same time enhancing some of its features.
- Experimenting with different colour combinations is something I find both challenging and fascinating. If a group of hues work well together and convey what I wish to express I tend to use them time and time again.
- The natural beauty that surrounds me and love of an individual subject has always been my inspiration. The bulbous shapes and vivid colours of the hills, lanes and sea of South Devon have held a particular fascination for me. Having a small studio close to the beach gives me ample opportunity to capture some of this.
- The human figure forms the basis of some of my work where the influence of the curvaceous Devon landscapes comes through.
- More recently, after visiting mountain villages in the south west region of France I have begun to be captivated by the angles and angular shapes created by buildings and their shadows.
- At the moment I am working on a series of pictures inspired by not only buildings but other features within coastal townscapes.
